Catherine Wang Carlson School of Management (University of Minnesota), Marketing, 2008 Carlson School of Management (University of Minnesota), May 2015 Hometown: Toronto, Canada Pre-MBA Work Experience: Marketing at General Mills Why did you decide to pursue an MBA? To learn more about myself and learn the skills that will allow me to pursue a long-term career in Brand/Product Management. I had first thought about pursing an MBA when I was in high school. After working for over 5 years post college and in 3 different industries, I was able to confirm that it is the right thing for me to pursue. What advice do you have for women who are considering business school? Determine what you would like to accomplish out of YOUR MBA experience and then find the school that you believe will allow you to do that the way that you think will make you the most happy. What's the most surprising you learned about business school during the application process? It is very much a self-exploration/reflection process. There are a lot of great schools out there, you need to figure out which one will be the best for YOU. Do you feel prepared for business school? I had thought I was pretty prepared for business school because I have had many friends who have gone back to school and have told me about their experiences. However, I was still very surprised about how fast time flies during the program. What do you do in your free time? Spend time with friends and family, watch movies, travel, and run. What would you tell your younger self about the MBA application process and being an MBA student? Don’t worry too much about the application process – everything will work itself out. Going back to school full-time is going to take a little bit of time to adjust to but it is a lot of fun. Please share something about your experience with Forté. I had the opportunity to attend my first Forté MBA Women’s Leadership Conference in New York City earlier this year and I had a great time meeting women from all around the world and learning from alumni and industry leaders. I would highly recommend attending this conference! There are also many great resources on the Forté website and in the Forté community. Have fun! You will be presented a lot of opportunities during business school, be sure to stay true to yourself and what you want to accomplish so that you don’t become overwhelmed by the volume of things that you think you should get involved in. The MBA experience is one that is very transformative in many different levels.
