Ask an MBA: What Tips Do You Have About Recruiting?

Recruiting can be a stressful time for MBA students, but it doesn’t have to be. In this month’s edition of the “Ask an MBA” series, current Forté Fellows offer tips to landing a fulfilling post-MBA job:

Push Yourself

One of the greatest lessons I learned is that you are never 100% ready for any role. When looking for a new role, the best roles are where you have ~50% new skills to learn and ~50% where you can draw on prior skills. If there is a role where you already have more than 50% of the skills then you are probably not pushing yourself enough.

Do Your Homework

There is a TON of information available about companies if you know where to look! Connect with alumni on LinkedIn, check out blogs or recent publications on the website – all of these will give you a sense of whether the company will be a good fit for you!

Narrow Your Focus

Prepare for job recruiting just like you would business school recruiting. Get to know the companies really well, identify early on where you feel chemistry, and focus your efforts there. Trying to split the difference and recruit for every company with equal attention won’t be as effective.

Listen to Your Gut

Really take the time to figure out where you want to be and what you bring to the table: introspection and self-awareness are key. Know what industry and work environment gets you excited. Listen to your gut when it comes to people and culture—it’s rarely wrong.
