How the Founder Of Urban Hiker SF Balances Her Side Hustle and Full-Time Job

Alumna of University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School (MBA, 2007)
University of Pennsylvania, The Lauder Institute (MA, 2007: International Studies) and Georgetown University (BS, 2001: French)

Alexandra Kenin wears many hats: she is an editor and writer at Wordsmithie, a digital content and design agency; she is a fluent French speaker and volunteer translator for Kiva, an international organization that provides microloans to entrepreneurs in the developing world; she is a recently published author of Urban Trails San Francisco; and she is founder of Urban Hiker SF, an urban hiking tour company that helps visitors explore San Francisco’s 70 miles of trails.

Before launching her business, she sold ballet pointe shoes across Europe and was a product marketing manager at Google. Alexandra never saw herself as entrepreneurial until she realized she could start and market test a business with a small amount of money. She is a testament that you can customize your career to fit your many facets.

Favorite book: Two books by Chris Guillebeau: The $100 Startup and The Art of Non-Conformity.
One word that describes her: Execution. I know it’s not exciting, but I am always doing something and trying to move things forward.
Song that makes her turn up the volume: When I am working, I listen to classical music because it gets me in “the zone.” “Barbra Streisand” by Duck Sauce is what I play for a run.
Career wow moment: Getting my book deal was definitely a career wow moment. I realized at that moment that anything I put my mind to, I could really do. It just changed my perspective on everything.
