MBA Students Flock to Nontraditional Internships

stock_businesswoman10These days, business schools provide ample opportunity for students to test the waters in the non-profit sector. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in non-profit management, check out this sample of intriguing internships available through Forté member schools’ career centers this semester. It’s clear that an MBA today launchs careers in a variety of different directions.

Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University
Farber Intern, Juma Ventures
Juma Ventures is a San Francisco-based organization that uses businesses as a vehicle for social change. Juma develops and operates market-based businesseslike Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shops and concessions at major league baseball and football venues–to provide employment opportunities, job training, and support services to very low-income youth. The Farber Intern works with Juma’s senior management team to develop a strategic plan that identifies expansion options into five new markets over the next decade.

Summer Associate, Acumen Fund
Acumen Fund is a global non-profit venture fund serving the 4 billion people living on less than $4 a day. The Fund identifies and supports extraordinary entrepreneurs in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors around the world. The intern supports, coordinates, and leads varied initiatives of the marketing team involving communications, donor engagement, and fundraising.

Farber Intern, Rubicon Bakery
The Rubicon Bakery products are distributed in high-end markets and grocery stores. Its Rubicon Program is a social service organization that builds housing, provides employment and mental health services, and creates jobs to assist the disadvantaged. In the past, the Farber intern has developed a personnel management system and an operational training manual for the bakery.

Summer Associate, Robin Hood Foundation
The Robin Hood Foundation’s objective is to end poverty in New York City. Since 1988, Robin Hood has invested over $255 million in more than 170 New York City organizations. The summer associate manages one or two engagements with Robin Hood grant recipient organizations, including one client project and one internal practice development effort.

Summer Associate, Jumpstart
Jumpstart recruits and trains college students to work one-on-one with preschool children from low-income backgrounds. The summer associate works to creatively address, design, or implement a groundbreaking and relevant project. Past interns have developed a business plan for a growth-focused pilot program in Boston and designed and implemented a quality testing process for Jumpstart’s new data management system.

Kelley School of Business, Indiana University
James B. Wigle Fellowship in Business Ethics, International Business Ethics Institute
The Institute sponsors public education initiatives that provide practical solutions for challenging global business ethics issues to ethics practitioners, senior business leaders, government and nongovernmental organizations, and academia. The Wigle Fellow works on substantive public education projects and assists with other Institute activities, including the development of organizational ethics programs.

Global Awareness Internships, Americans for Informed Democracy
Americans for Informed Democracy (AID) raises global awareness in the United States. Interns get a hands-on introduction to the fields of global education, non-profit management, and youth organizing, helping to lead media outreach, grant-writing, partnership development, fundraising, civic education, and long-term strategy development. This is an unparalleled introduction to the diverse professional opportunities within international NGOs.

Summer Associate, The Broad Foundation
The Broad Foundation’s mission is to dramatically improve K-12 urban public education through better governance, management, labor relations, and competition. Summer associates analyze potential investments and assist with current grant initiatives.

Summer Intern, Center for Financial Services Innovation
CFSI’s mission is to assist the financial services industry to identify, develop, and implement innovative ways of delivering asset-building opportunities to the underbanked market. The intern is involved in a variety of applied research and communications projects and helps to manage relationships with financial services companies that are looking for innovative ways to serve underbanked and emerging markets.

Buchanan/Burnham Internships, Newport Historical Society
The Newport Historical Society collects and preserves artifacts, photographs, documents, publications, and genealogical records related to the history of Newport County, RI. The intern studies and promotes the diverse and dynamic history of Newport, RI, gaining hands-on experience in interpretation, collections management, visitor services, and public relations and educational programs.
