Applying to business school was initially a daunting process. I knew I wanted to go and I had programs in mind, but there was so much to do.
I knew I wanted to go to one of the top MBA programs in the country so I started by looking at rankings. One of the first mistakes I made was choosing to apply to a few programs based on the name without doing much research. My limited research consisted of looking at their websites.
What I quickly discovered after attending a Forté event was that each program has its own unique attributes. Some programs cater better to finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, or something else. I had picked a few programs to apply to based on the name and location, but they didn’t have a strong focus in marketing, which was what I wanted to do post-MBA.
If you have the time, I suggest planning a trip to see a few of the schools you are particularly interested in. Many of the programs provide opportunities to meet with admissions and current students, tour the school, and sit in on a class.
If you can’t visit, most schools have a portion of their website with students’ profiles who you can connect with to learn more about the school. I reached out to a number of current students and learned a lot about the programs that way.
I also attended a Forté event where I had the opportunity to speak with admissions representatives from over 20 schools. It was through this thorough research process that I ultimately found the University of Michigan was the best fit for me.
It takes some time to figure out what is unique to each MBA program, but the time you invest in doing that research will help to make your application stronger and will set you up to ultimately attend a school that is right for you.
