My Schedule is Full! It’s Campus Recruiting Time

As quickly as summer semester ended, fall semester began. Before I signed off for the summer, I was about to enjoy a glorious week off. I, like most of my classmates, took full advantage of this time to spend time with loved ones, read non-educational (read: paperback) books and actually spend some quality time prepping for career recruiting season.  The last point was especially necessary, as the annual Goizueta Career Connection networking event was taking place at the tail end of our August break. This year, the GCC was located at the lovely High Museum of Art. There were over twenty companies present and all MBA candidates were invited. It was another great opportunity to network with fellow students, alumni and company representatives, as well as take advantage of free gin.

So, friends, we are officially in full-tilt recruiting season! Company representatives (and usually some alumni) are visiting our little corner of the world to show what their companies have to offer and what kinds of jobs they have available. These presentations are usually followed by a day of interviews for the afore-mentioned job opportunities.  Doing the math with my hp12c calculator (that I bought for school and now use as a paperweight), I have calculated that ambitious students can have up to 10 interviews a week!  Most don’t, but there is a buzz around campus about who is interviewing for what positions.

Diversity conferences go hand in hand with on-campus recruiting. The two largest ones are sponsored by the National Black MBA and National Society of Hispanic MBA Associations. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be a minority to attend. These conferences are open to all and feature several days of career fairs and other activities. These fairs are especially helpful for individuals who are interested in jobs outside of Atlanta, and several of my classmates interviewed and received job offers on the spot!

To make a very long story short, fall semester is as much about recruiting as it is about school and academics. While the class schedule has lightened up (as compared to summer), the days are more packed than ever, which means that time is flying by!
